![]() The Bell Huntsville Dragonboat Festival is both a fundraiser and a lot of fun. It's also one of the fastest growing sports in North America. Utilizing a people-powered boat with a decorative dragonhead, a drummer and a steerperson, 20 paddlers dig in to see who can propel their boat over a set course the fastest. The Bell Huntsville Dragonboat Festival is a joint project of the Huntsville-Lake of Bays Rotary Club and the Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary. The thousands of dollars raised at this event stay in the community and are used to fund hospital equipment, infrastructure projects and the good work of Rotary, including the Chrysalis women's shelter. A rallying cry for local businesses and organizations, the festival sees residents engage in friendly competition, which is a boon to economic and social health. The attraction of dozens of dragonboat racers to Huntsville brings tremendous spin-off benefits to area restaurants, motels and retail stores. Each year the festival builds on its previous successes. Organizers meet with other groups to share information on growing the sport. Active marketing campaigns encourage early sign-up to create an energy that leads to more participation. Each year additional entertainment options are explored to keep racers in the Huntsville community a bit longer, further impacting local business. The festival is an exhilarating way to get on board with an event that has tremendous growth and fundraising potential. The festival celebrates Chinese culture and plays a role in bringing two cultures together. It's an activity that unites people of all ages and abilities and it promotes healthy, outdoor living for the residents and visitors in Huntsville-Lake of Bays. - Courtesy of the Huntsville Forester |
